Palliative Care in the Islands of Lakshadweep
Thanal Charitable Organisation, founded in 2005 by Mr. K. Abdul Hameed, fondly known as Moulana, has revolutionized healthcare in the remote Lakshadweep islands.
Under the leadership of Dr. Ali, the primary palliative care physician and Nodal Officer for the National Program for Palliative Care with the National Health Mission (NHM) of Lakshadweep, the organization began its journey into palliative care in 2014 with its first center at Kavaratti, guided by Dr. M.R. Rajagopal. Since then, Thanal has expanded its services across all 11 islands, with major offices in Amini, Androth, and Kalpeni.
Thanal provides comprehensive home care services, with teams visiting five to six patients daily to address the needs of individuals with chronic illnesses, disabilities, and end-of-life care requirements. To combat the rising prevalence of chronic kidney disease, the organization has established dialysis centers in Androth and Amini. Additionally, essential medical tools like wheelchairs and walkers are distributed from the Kavaratti headquarters, and transported by sea to reach patients across the islands.
Recognizing the importance of holistic support, Thanal runs skill development programs aimed at empowering patients and caregivers. Training in coconut harvesting, masonry, and painting equips individuals with the means to improve their livelihoods while fostering independence.
Thanal collaborates with government bodies like NHM and the Directorate of Health to integrate homecare services into existing systems. Essential pain management drugs are managed through the Indira Gandhi District Hospital, with plans to expand the availability of oral morphine. Volunteer training and partnerships with organizations like Pallium India have strengthened Thanal’s capacity to deliver impactful healthcare.
The geographical isolation of Lakshadweep, which limits healthcare facilities to secondary-level hospitals, presents significant challenges. However, Thanal’s community-driven approach ensures that essential care reaches even the most remote corners of the islands. The organization’s forward-looking initiatives include plans to establish shelter homes for the elderly and disabled, expand dialysis services, and digitize data management systems to improve coordination and collaboration.
Recently, Pallium India’s Regional Facilitators, Lalit S and Johnsurya J, visited Thanal and observed the remarkable work being done by the organization. Our discussions explored opportunities for collaboration between Pallium India and Thanal to enhance palliative care delivery in Lakshadweep.
Through its compassionate care and innovative solutions, Thanal Charitable Organisation has transformed healthcare in Lakshadweep, improving the quality of life for countless individuals.
