  • Nursing Lead, Palliative Care- OBLF, Bangalore

    About the Role:

    About the role: We are seeking a compassionate and experienced Lead Nurse
    for the Palliative Care Dept at CVRGH. You will also play a pivotal role in
    providing high-quality care to patients with complex palliative care needs,, in
    the surrounding community as well.


    About the Organisation:

    One Billion Lives Foundation (OBLF) is a well-recognised Non-Governmental
    Organisation working amongst marginalised communities and urban poor in
    Karnataka state. Our Geriatric and Palliative Care program serves rural and
    peri-urban communities in Bangalore city and surrounding areas. We are in the
    process of setting up an inpatient Palliative Care department at Sir C.V.Raman
    Memorial Hospital (CVRGH) under an MoU with DoHFW, Gok.

    Required Qualifications

    Essentials:

    • Bachelor’s degree in General Nursing and Midwifery from a recognised institution; registered with the Karnataka State Nursing Council.
    • Minimum of 5 years of experience working in a clinical capacity, preferably in palliative care.
    • Fluent in both English and Kannada, with excellent verbal and written
      communication skills.
    • Demonstrated competence in palliative care principles and practices.
    • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced healthcare environment and to
      manage a team effectively.

      Desirable:
    • Postgraduate training in Palliative Care.
    • Experience in ward management or supervision.
    • Experience in working with the public health system in Karnataka

    Responsibilities
    1. Clinical Management
    • Provide comprehensive outpatient and inpatient nursing care to patients
      attending the Palliative Care Dept at CVRGH.
    • Conduct home visits for patients with complex palliative care needs,
      assessing their environment and providing tailored care interventions.
    • Evaluate patient progress and assist in delivery of telemedicine services,
      ensuring the maintenance of accurate and up-to-date patient records.

      2. Administrative Duties
    • Facilitate adequate provisioning of essential drugs and consumables by monitoring stocks and making projections for future needs.
    • Ensure safekeeping of drugs including narcotics, consumables, instruments
      and other property of OBLF at the secondary unit.
    • Participate in staff education and training programs to enhance palliative care
      knowledge and skills.
    • Facilitate continuous Quality Improvement by ensuring appropriate data
      collection and entry into state NCD portal.
    • Day-to-day oversight of nursing staff and support services, including
      housekeeping and waste management etc.

      3. Community Engagement
    • Support outreach activities in the community to help identify and serve patients with Palliative Care needs.
    • Create relationships with elected representatives, public officials, and other
      stakeholders to create awareness and generate support for PC.
    • Drive partnerships with small nursing homes, primary health centres,
      destitute homes etc. to strengthen community-based GPC.


      4. Collaboration with the Public Health System

    This job involves working closely with the public health system without being
    directly integrated to it. The nurse should demonstrate resourcefulness and
    adaptability in overcoming bureaucratic challenges, and fostering a culture of
    collaboration and teamwork to achieve optimal patient outcomes within the
    constraints of the public health system. Through all this, the nurse is expected to
    uphold ethical and professional standards and advocate for the needs of
    palliative care patients within and outside the healthcare system.

    Job Title: Medical Director – Palliative Care Centre
    Location: Tumkur, Karnataka
    Reporting to: Board of Directors, Ajit Isaac Foundation

    Job Summary:

    We are seeking an experienced and compassionate Senior Doctor who will also serve as the Medical Director to lead the operations and clinical services at a newly developed Palliative Care Centre in Tumkur, Karnataka. This role is pivotal in ensuring the provision of high-quality palliative care services, overseeing a 75-bed facility and leading a multidisciplinary team dedicated to improving the quality of life for patients and their families.

    Key Responsibilities:

    1. Clinical Leadership and Patient Care
      • Provide expert clinical care in palliative medicine, including pain management and symptom relief, ensuring adherence to best practices in palliative care.
      • Undertake relevant medical interventions needed for optimum pain management as per patient diagnosis
      • Lead and oversee a team of healthcare professionals, ensuring that care is delivered with compassion, dignity, and professionalism.
    2. Operational Leadership
      • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the 75-bed facility, ensuring optimal functioning of all departments, including patient care, administrative, and support services.
      • Advice on the standard operating procedures (SOPs) and implement operational policies, and guidelines to maintain the highest standards of care and safety.
      • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, healthcare standards, and ethical practices.
    3. Strategic Planning and Development
      • Lead strategic planning for the centre’s growth, including help in outreach within the medical fraternity, financial oversight, budget planning, and resource allocation.
      • Drive initiatives for community engagement and awareness programs to promote palliative care within Tumkur and surrounding areas.
      • Collaborate with stakeholders and partners, including government bodies, healthcare organizations, universities, and local communities, to enhance palliative care services.
    4. Team Management and Training
      • Recruit, train, and manage a skilled and compassionate team of healthcare providers and support staff.
      • Organize and conduct training sessions, workshops, and continuous learning opportunities to enhance the skills of the team in palliative care.
      • Foster a culture of teamwork, empathy, and dedication to patient-centric care.
      • Manage collaborations with relevant technical partners for the centre
    5. Quality and Performance Improvement
      • Develop and monitor quality assurance metrics to assess and improve patient care outcomes.
      • Implement feedback mechanisms to address patient and family needs, ensuring their voices are central to service improvement.
      • Lead initiatives for process improvement, leveraging data and analytics to drive efficiencies and enhance patient satisfaction.

    Qualifications and Skills:

    • Educational Requirements: MD with a specialization in Palliative Medicine. Additional certifications or degrees in palliative care are highly desirable.
    • Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in palliative care, with demonstrated expertise in pain management and anaesthesia administration.
    • Language Skills: Fluency in Kannada is mandatory to ensure effective communication with patients and families.
    • Leadership Skills: Strong leadership and managerial skills with experience overseeing clinical and operational teams in a healthcare setting.
    • Interpersonal Skills: Excellent communication, empathy, and the ability to connect with patients, families, and staff.
    • Analytical and Decision-Making Skills: Strong analytical skills and the ability to make sound decisions in a fast-paced environment.

    Additional Requirements:

    • Demonstrated commitment to the values and principles of palliative care.
    • Experience in leading or setting up a healthcare facility, ideally in a rural or semi-urban setting, will be advantageous.
