In her insightful talk, the esteemed Guest of Honour, Dr. Kusuma Kumary (Former Professor and HOD of Pediatric Oncology and Deputy Director of RCC – Regional Cancer Centre, Trivandrum), underscored the vital role of pediatricians and other professionals in shaping a compassionate care framework for children and their families. Her words resonated deeply, inspiring both attendees and professionals to strengthen their commitment to this cause.
The event was graced by distinguished guests, including Dr. Bindu S., Superintendent of SAT Hospital, and Mr. Manoj G.S., Executive Director of TIPS. Their presence reinforced the importance of collaboration between government institutions and NGOs in expanding pediatric palliative care.
Adding a deeply personal touch to the gathering, Mrs. Sumi Mol S., one of the parents, shared her moving journey with Pallium India. Her heartfelt speech highlighted the transformative power of compassion, support, and community in overcoming challenges.
Moments of Joy and Togetherness
The highlight of the day was the recreational activities designed to bring joy to the children and their families. The celebration included a cake-cutting ceremony to honor the children’s birthdays, followed by songs, storytelling and playful moments that filled the hall with laughter and cheer. It was particularly special for the children admitted to SAT Hospital, including those on dialysis, as they could actively participate and share in the joy – an opportunity they often miss due to their health conditions.
There was a live photo booth, where families had their portraits clicked and received printed copies. For many, it was their first-ever family photograph, creating a deeply emotional and lasting memory. The families expressed immense gratitude for this gesture, with some even calling it the best part of their day.
The event concluded with a special moment of gratitude and recognition. Each of the 21 families who attended received thoughtful gifts. The mothers, often the silent warriors behind these children’s journeys, were celebrated with beautiful sarees. The gesture left the mothers feeling loved, appreciated and pampered. The children also received gifts that lit up their faces with pure joy.

A Collaborative Success
The success of this event was made possible through the collaborative efforts of SAT Hospital’s staff, including the nursing superintendent, housekeeping team, security personnel, and the dedicated organisers from Pallium India. The seamless teamwork demonstrated how government institutions and NGOs can join hands to create meaningful change in the lives of children and their families.
Dr. Kusuma Kumary aptly noted how such events foster an understanding of the relevance of palliative care and the need for integration into the healthcare system. The feedback from SAT professionals, who witnessed the event’s impact first hand, echoed this sentiment.
