On 13th May, 2023, Dr Mohanan Kunnummal, Vice Chancellor, Kerala University of Health Sciences, launched Essentials of Palliative Care-India (EPCI – an online Self learning module for Doctors and Nurses).

Essentials of Palliative Care-India (EPC-I) is an Indianized training module of the Center to Advance Palliative Care (CAPC) of the USA. This is specifically designed for Indian healthcare professionals and organizations. It includes culturally relevant content and case studies, and addresses the unique challenges and opportunities for palliative care in India.

Dr Mohanan Kunnummal also formally released the Palliative Care Nursing Module (20 hours mandatory module on palliative care for B Sc Nursing as recommended by Indian Nursing Council), in the presence of Dr M R Rajagopal, Chairman of Pallium India and Dr Sunil Kumar, Additional Director, Trivandrum Institute of Palliative Sciences and Pallium India team members who joined in person or via zoom.

This module, prepared by Pallium India’s nursing team, has been drafted as recommended by the Indian Nursing Council (INC ) for 4th-semester BSc Nursing students. Integrating the palliative care nursing module in the BSc Nursing curriculum is a landmark moment for palliative care education in India. It demonstrates a proactive approach by the Indian Nursing Council to address the growing need for competent palliative care providers. We believe this module will improve palliative care services and enhance the quality of life for individuals with serious health-related suffering by equipping nursing students with the necessary knowledge and skills.

During the release ceremony Dr Latha A, Faculty, College of Nursing, AIIMS Jodhpur, who led the drafting team, thanked Dr Sreedevi Warrier (Head, Education and Skill Building, Pallium India), Lt. Alice Stella Virginia (Retd) (National faculty at the Indian Association of Palliative Care & Pallium India), Lt. Col. Lovely Antony (Retd) (Professor and Head of Community Health Nursing, National College of Nursing in Kozhikode), Mrs. Anu Savio Thelly (Nurse Consultant, Dept. of Palliative Medicine, Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute, Puducherry), Dr Srikanth Srinivasan (Additional Professor in the Department of Community Medicine, AllMs, Jodhpur), Dr Anup John Thomas (Specialist Paediatrician, Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates), Mrs Sheeba RS (Section Head, Clinical Training, Pallium India, Trivandrum), Mrs Sangeetha Murugan (Tutor,Karunashraya, Bengaluru) and Mr Terrymiz I (Christian Mission Hospital Oddanchatram) bringing their expertise and experiences to enrich the development and drafting of this module.
