On Sunday, April 6, 2025, in the serene premises of Brahma Suncity Society in Wadgaonsheri, Pune, Pallium India organized an awareness session to commemorate World Health Day, observed globally on April 7.

The session was graced by the presence and expertise of two distinguished palliative care doctors, Dr. Shubha Prasad and Dr. (Col) Shiva Prasad, both esteemed members of the society. Their dedication to community well–being transformed the session into a meaningful dialogue on health, aging, and compassionate care.

The session coincided with the auspicious festival of Ram Navami, a day that symbolises hope and renewal. Over 60 residents, primarily senior citizens, participated in the discussion, reflecting a strong community spirit and eagerness to learn about crucial health aspects.

Ms Sunanda Samal (Regional Facilitator, Pallium India) introduced Pallium India and its activities to the audience, focussing on volunteers’ training and community-based palliative care.

Dr Shubha Prasad and Dr (Col) Shiva Prasad led an engaging and informative session focusing on palliative care, healthy aging, and the importance of holistic well-being. They emphasised the necessity of early interventions, pain management, emotional support, and the role of families in providing dignified care to aging members.

They also touched upon dispelling myths and highlighted the role of palliative care beyond end-of-life care, including chronic disease management, lifestyle modifications, preventive healthcare, and mental well-being strategies for senior citizens. They encouraged neighbors and families to build a support network for the elderly. Many of the attendees shared personal experiences as well as concerns regarding their health and caregiving responsibilities. The interactive format allowed them to ask questions and receive expert guidance, fostering a greater understanding of palliative care’s role in enhancing the quality of life.

Dr Shubha Prasad reiterated the need for continued conversations, to ensure that seniors in the community feel supported, informed, and empowered in their healthcare decisions.

The event at Brahma Suncity served as a reminder of the importance of health awareness, particularly for senior citizens. By bridging the gap between medical expertise and community engagement, initiatives like these pave the way for a more informed and compassionate society.

As the session concluded, the sense of gratitude and motivation among the attendees was palpable. With continued efforts and awareness, the community can move forward in embracing healthier and more supportive lifestyles for its aging population.
