Commemorating World Cancer Day 2025
In commemoration of World Cancer Day 2025, the Department of Zoology & Applied Nutrition & Public Health at Sadakathullah Appa College(Autonomous), Palayamkottai, Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, in collaboration with the Government Museum, Tirunelveli, organized a Cancer Awareness Program on February 10, 2025. The event aimed to raise awareness about cancer and the crucial role of palliative care in improving the quality of life for cancer patients. This year’s theme, “United by Unique,” highlights the importance of personalizing care for each patient while working collectively to reduce the suffering of every individual.

Dr. Hashmath Farhaana, the Lead of Virtual Education from the Department of Education and Skill Building at Pallium India Trust, delivered an insightful talk on “Palliative Care in Cancer” to about 150 undergraduate and postgraduate students from the respective departments and highlighted the importance of palliative care, emphasizing that it is not just for end-of-life stages but is an integral part of cancer treatment from the moment of diagnosis.
The session not only deepened the students’ understanding of palliative care but also encouraged them to recognize how their respective fields—whether zoology, psychology, or public health—can contribute to enhancing the care and well-being of cancer patients. Additionally, the talk emphasized the importance of community engagement and volunteerism in the practice of palliative care.
After the session, students expressed their gratitude and shared wonderful feedback, stating that they now have a clear understanding of what palliative care is and the importance of being empathetic and compassionate when supporting patients and their families with serious health related suffering. Many students also expressed their desire to visit Pallium India in the near future to visualize and better understand how palliative care is practiced in real-life settings.
This program is an important step in fostering a compassionate approach to cancer care and empowering students to make a meaningful difference in the lives of patients. As we observe World Cancer Day 2025, initiatives like this help pave the way for a future where cancer care is holistic, patient-centered, and compassionate.
