On December 28, 2024, Pallium India organized a heartwarming event for the families of pediatric palliative care patients under its flagship Rithu program. Held at the serene Akkulam Tourist Village in Trivandrum, the event brought together 31 families, staff, volunteers, and special guests for a day filled with joy, support, and reflection.

The event started with inspiring speeches from key figures. Dr. Sangeetha Suresh, the in-charge doctor of the pediatric department, welcomed everyone, while Dr. Sunil Kumar delivered the presidential address. Followed by heart touching speech by Mr. Joby AS (cine actor) and Dr. Kusuma Kumary (Former HOD Pediatric oncology RCC) The interactive sessions further deepened the connection between families, staff, and volunteers. Ms Aswathy Kattumpuram shared a deeply moving account of her journey as a mother caring for her little girl who battled glioma. She recounted the emotional and physical challenges she faced during this difficult time, including the end-of-life phase, and how the unwavering support from the Pallium India team became her anchor through it all.

 From her first interaction with the team to the ongoing support she continues to receive after her daughter’s passing, Ms. Aswathy expressed immense gratitude for the compassionate care provided. Her heartfelt story resonated deeply with everyone present, offering a glimpse into the strength and resilience of a parent’s love.

 Her words brought a wave of emotion to the gathering, as many had tears in their eyes, moved by her courage and grace. At the same time, her gratitude and positivity inspired the parents in attendance, reminding them they are not alone in their struggles. It was a moment of collective empathy and hope, strengthening the bond within the Rithu community.This year’s 5th & last Rithu program was designed as a Christmas and New Year celebration, creating a safe and joyful platform for families to feel supported and heard. Renowned cine actor Mr. Joby A.S. inaugurated the event, marking a special beginning to a day brimming with love and laughter.The program featured an exciting magic show by Mr. Arun Babu, whose performance captivated both children and adults alike. Cultural events organized for the families were met with enthusiastic participation, while children enjoyed the rides at the park, including toy trains and light swings, fostering a sense of freedom and fun.To make the day even more memorable, birthdays of children from the past two months were celebrated with a cake-cutting ceremony. Adding to the festive atmosphere, Santa Claus engaged actively with the children and families, distributing Christmas cakes and gifts, creating an unforgettable experience for everyone.

 A particularly touching highlight of the day was the gifting of individual family photographs, taken during the event, as cherished keepsakes. Families also enjoyed a delicious spread, including a chocolate fountain, ice cream, snacks, tea, and a sumptuous lunch. Travel allowances were provided to families unable to afford transportation, ensuring that financial barriers did not hinder participation.

 The event also served as an opportunity to reflect on the journey of Rithu over the past year. A feedback session was conducted, where families shared their experiences, expressed gratitude, and offered suggestions for the future. Their heartfelt testimonials highlighted the significant impact of Rithu in providing a sense of community and emotional support.

 

The program not only enriched the lives of the attending families but also garnered public attention. News channels and social media platforms covered the event extensively, spreading awareness about the importance of parent support groups for children with serious health-related suffering. This marked a significant step in educating the community about the critical role such programs play in society.

I would like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude to the entire Pallium India team for making the Rithu program a resounding success and bringing smiles to the faces of the children and their families. A special thanks goes to the senior management team for placing their trust in us, believing in our vision, and providing unwavering support to bring this event to life. Their guidance and encouragement turned our aspirations into reality, ensuring the program was executed with excellence and joy.

I am also deeply thankful to my team clinical team, social work team, event coordinator, resource mobilisation team and all the staff at Pallium, for their tireless efforts and dedication. I would like to especially acknowledge these individuals for being the strong pillars behind the success of this event.

 A heartfelt thanks to our volunteers, who participated and contributed selflessly to make the program even more meaningful. I would also like to extend special gratitude to Mrs. Deepa Srikumar for her invaluable efforts in ensuring social media participation, which significantly enhanced public awareness about our activities and the Rithu program.

 Lastly, I thank the patients and families who joined us and made the event truly memorable. Their presence and enthusiasm have set even higher expectations for the future, and we are committed to meeting them with the same spirit of care and dedication. Together, we have come a long way, and this program stands as a testament to the power of teamwork, compassion, and community. Thank you all for making this dream a beautiful reality!

The success of the Rithu program this year stands as a testament to Pallium India’s commitment to holistic care. By creating moments of joy, sharing, and togetherness, the event underscored the importance of addressing not just the medical but also the emotional and social needs of children and their families. 

This celebration of life and resilience has not only strengthened the Rithu community but has also opened doors to greater awareness and involvement, paving the way for a brighter and more inclusive future for pediatric palliative care.
