A recent official visit to Himachal Pradesh by Pallium India’s Regional Facilitator, Dr Jatin Bhukal, marked a significant milestone in advancing palliative care services in the region. Key meetings with healthcare stakeholders in Shimla, Lahaul & Spiti and Kinnaur laid the groundwork for creating a way forward.

The visit began with a pivotal meeting at the National Health Mission (NHM) office in Shimla, where directives were issued to Chief Medical Officers (CMOs) of all districts to extend support and cooperation to Dr Jatin Bhukal.

In Reckong Peo, Kinnaur, discussions with the Chief Medical Officer and Medical Officer culminated in the possibility of a Palliative Care Outpatient Department (PC OPD) and potential home-based care, contingent on NHM support.

In Kaza which is situated at an altitude of 3800m, the Block Medical Officer expressed readiness to collaborate with Pallium India once the necessary human resources are provided.

NHM Himachal Pradesh’s commitment to training doctors, nurses, and other Healthcare Staff will ensure healthcare professionals are equipped to provide comprehensive palliative care services.

The visit included memorable moments at some of the world’s highest locations, such as the highest post office in Hikkim (4400m) and the highest village connected by a motorable road, Komic (4587m). These visits underscored the commitment required to bring essential healthcare services to remote and challenging terrains.

For palliative care services to become a reality, it takes collective effort by healthcare professionals, government officials and community organizations. This is apparent amongst the people of Himachal Pradesh who have demonstrated their commitment towards this issue, and the future looks promising for the people of Himachal Pradesh.
