If we really mean it, let us remember the millions of elderly mothers living alone in the country. (There are millions of them in India. In our tiny Kerala alone, there are more than 143,000 of them living all alone, according to India population study). Many would be living with illnesses, destined to die alone some day. Some without physical illnesses would still be having the sad affliction of loneliness. It is easy to pretend that they do not exist.
If only we care, there would be someone to whom each one of us can reach out – with a meal for her hungry stomach, or at least with a phone call to reassure her that someone cares.
