What is the Global Fellowship in Palliative Medicine (GFPM)?
The Global Fellowship in Palliative Medicine (GFPM) is a one-year hybrid fellowship program offered by Pallium India through the Trivandrum Institute of Palliative Sciences (TIPS).
It aims to train physicians to provide advanced palliative care, with a special focus on the realities of low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).
Who is organizing this fellowship?
The fellowship is organized by Pallium India, Trivandrum Institute of Palliative Sciences (TIPS), a World Health Organization Collaborating Centre (WHOCC) for Training and Policy on Access to Pain Relief.
Is this fellowship affiliated with Queen’s University, Canada?
The curriculum for GFPM has been developed in collaboration with faculty from the Queen’s University Global Oncology Program, Kingston, Ontario, Canada.
However, this is NOT an accredited Queen’s University Fellowship Program.
Why is this fellowship called a “Global” fellowship?
This fellowship addresses the global gap in palliative care education, particularly in LMICs where access to trained professionals is limited.In addition to the focus on LMICs this course will provide with information on a global perspective on palliative care and these sessions would be handled by global leaders in palliative care from different countries.
The program emphasizes:
- Serious health-related suffering
- Cultural, economic, and systemic realities of LMICs
- Capacity building, research, and leadership in palliative care.
Is this course focussed only on cancer palliative care?
This course is focused on the concept of serious health-related suffering (SHS) and covers a wide range of non-cancer conditions requiring palliative care, addressed across 12 modules including chronic non-cancer pain, chronic kidney disease, paediatric palliative care, respiratory diseases, neurological diseases, and several other topics.
Who is eligible to apply?
Any doctor with:
MBBS or BDS degree
Valid Medical or Dental Council registration
Doctors with disabilities are encouraged to apply.
What is the duration of the fellowship?
The fellowship duration is one year.
What are the components of the fellowship and how is it delivered?
The fellowship includes:
- Foundation Course in Palliative Medicine (FCPM) – Online (Live sessions)
- Master Course in Palliative Medicine (MCPM)- Online (Live sessions)
- Advanced Course in Palliative Medicine (ACPM) -Self directed learning (Online)
- 30 days of Hands-on Training (HoT)- Onsite training
- Training of Trainers (ToT) – Onsite training(2 days)
Final evaluations leading to the certification of Global Fellowship in Palliative Medicine (GFPM) – Onsite (2 days)
How is the online teaching conducted?
- Live online sessions (mostly evenings according to Indian Standard Time (IST)
- Self-directed learning modules
- Case discussions
- Assignments and MCQs
What is the Hands-on Training (HoT) requirement?
A total of 30 days HoT is mandatory.
21 days mandatory at Trivandrum Institute of Palliative Sciences (TIPS)
Remaining 9 days can be completed at another Pallium India-approved center as per mentioned in the prospectus
Also all 30 days can also be completed at TIPS if preferred.
Where can the 9-day external clinical posting be done?
At any of the Pallium India-approved centers across India, listed in the prospectus. These include institutions across East, West, North, Central, and South India.
How many certificates will be awarded?
Upon successful completion, candidates will receive four certificates:
- Foundation Course in Palliative Medicine (FCPM)
- Master Course in Palliative Medicine (MCPM)
- Advanced Course in Palliative Medicine (ACPM)
- Global Fellowship in Palliative Medicine (GFPM)
What is the course fee?
Indian participants: INR 50,000
Overseas participants: USD 1500
When and how should the fee be paid?
The fee must be paid in full after selection and intimation of acceptance.
Admission is confirmed only after payment.
If the fee is not paid within one week, the offer will be cancelled.

What is the selection process?
Applications are reviewed by an external core selection committee.
Selection results will be communicated via email.
What is the final evaluation process for the GFPM?
Evaluation includes:
- Case presentation
- Research topic presentation
- Written theory examinations (cancer & non-cancer)
- OSCE
- Viva voce
- Assignment scores
- Each component has a minimum pass score requirement.
What happens if I fail an assessment?
Candidates can re-attempt the assignments if they fail.
For the final evaluation, up to three attempts are allowed
Re-attempts will be conducted with subsequent batches
Is attendance mandatory?
Minimum 80% attendance is required to attend the final examination
Can working doctors pursue this course?
Yes. The fellowship is specifically designed for working professionals, with:
Mostly online learning
Flexible scheduling for hands-on training
Minimal disruption to current work
Will this fellowship enable me to practice palliative care?
The fellowship provides structured education, clinical exposure, and competency-based training in palliative medicine.Practicing rights depend on national regulations of the participant’s country.

Eligibility
Any doctor with MBBS or BDS with corresponding medical/ dental council registration can apply for this course. Doctors with disabilities are encouraged to apply. We reserve one seat and will provide reasonable accommodations to participate meaningfully in the program.
(In accordance with the rules of the Dental Council of India (DCI), the holder of a BDS degree will be eligible to practise palliative care in conditions associated with the oral and maxillofacial area. Under the NDPS rules of 2015, BDS with training in pain management is adequate qualification to be in-charge of a Recognised Medical Institution (RMI) to stock and dispense Essential Narcotic Drugs (END) including morphine, methadone and fentanyl).
Course Fees
The course fee is INR 50,000 and USD 1200. The fee is to be paid in full only on intimation of acceptance for fellowship.
Admission to the course is guaranteed only on payment of the fee.
For Overseas participants, the fee is USD 1200 (40% scholarship for participants from LMICs, upon selection)
How to Apply
Selection Process
Applications will be reviewed by the external core selection committee and eligible candidates will be notified via email on or before 29 November 2025.
Upon receiving this email, the candidate should pay the fee to secure a seat for the Fellowship program. If the fee is not paid within a week, the offer will automatically stand cancelled, and the seat will be allotted to the next eligible candidate.
