“A young Border Security Force employee with just 2 years of service, has brought in his father, terminally ill with cancer and in terrible pain.

My mind goes back to another spring and another patient who lay dying of cancer and his offspring who also wanted to be there to care for him but could not do so. Securing leave in the armed forces is as much of an issue now, as it was back then.

Two decades later, however, I am on the other side.”

As a palliative care physician, Dr Savita Butola enables a young constable to have the satisfaction of giving his father a kind and compassionate life and death, while remembering an experience from her own past.
