Pallium India Organises Opioids Availability Workshop in Bihar

Access to essential pain-relief medicines remains a crucial component of quality palliative care. Strengthening awareness of regulatory requirements and building the capacity of healthcare institutions are important steps towards ensuring that patients with serious illnesses receive appropriate pain relief.

With this objective, Pallium India, in collaboration with Mahavir Cancer Sansthan, Patna, organised an Online Opioids Availability Workshop (OAW) for Bihar on 12 October 2026. The session brought together approximately 35 participants, including doctors, paramedical staff and other professionals associated with palliative care.

Dr. Rita Rani (Senior Consultant Red. Onc. and Palliative care in-charge, Mahavir Cancer Sansthan, Patna) presented the regulatory framework governing essential narcotic drugs and explained the process and institutional requirements for Recognised Medical Institution (RMI) registration. Shri Nityanand, State Drugs Controller, Bihar, emphasised regulatory compliance, institutional preparedness and the importance of training healthcare professionals. Dr. Sunil Kumar MM, Director, Trivandrum Institute of Palliative Sciences, highlighted the role of professional training and institutional readiness in facilitating appropriate access to opioids.

An interactive discussion addressed participants’ queries on RMI applications, documentation, pending applications and training opportunities.

The workshop reinforced the importance of collaboration among regulatory authorities, healthcare institutions and palliative care organisations to strengthen access to essential pain-relief medicines and improve the quality of life of patients living with serious illnesses.

Pallium India continues to support healthcare professionals and institutions in strengthening palliative care services and promoting access to appropriate pain relief.
