1st Assam IAPCON 2024: A New Dawn for Palliative Care in Assam
The first-ever Assam IAPCON 2024 marked a historic milestone in the realm of palliative care, uniting doctors, medical workers, social workers, and numerous other professionals from across Assam. Hosted by Pratishruti Cancer and Palliative Trust in collaboration with IAPC Assam State Chapter, this two-day event was held on 14th and 15th December 2024 in Dibrugarh, Assam.
Distinguished national speakers, including Dr. Sushma Bhatnagar, Dr. KV Ganapathy, and Dr. Gayatri Palat, graced the event. IAPC President Dr. Sushma Bhatnagar, the chief guest at the inaugural function, emphasized the importance of palliative medicine training for doctors nationwide to provide essential services to the people. She lauded the efforts in Assam, expressing gratitude to all involved.
Dr. Alok Kumar Buragohain, President of Pratishruti and Vice-Chancellor of Royal Global University, highlighted the dire need for improved access to palliative care and advocated for the development of a mobile app to facilitate daily access to palliative care.
The event saw heartfelt calls for greater focus on palliative care training from Dr. Dinesh Chandra Goswami, a pioneer of palliative care in Assam and President of the IAPC Assam Branch. The conference featured over 40 lectures on palliative care topics and poster presentations by seventeen dedicated doctors and medical staff.
Pallium India Regional Facilitator for North East, Rontu Sangma, also presented on Implementing Palliative Care in a New Setting, which highlighted the challenges and innovative strategies to introduce palliative care services in new environments.
This groundbreaking event was attended by around 600 participants from across the country, making it a significant step forward for palliative care in Assam. The IAPC Assam Branch Executive Meeting held in the evening further solidified the conference’s impact and future direction.
The conference concluded on an inspiring note, leaving attendees with renewed energy and commitment to advancing palliative care in their communities. Through collaborative efforts and innovative solutions, the IAPCON Assam 2024 set a solid foundation for a brighter, more inclusive future in palliative care.
