Patna, the capital of Bihar, was once known as Pataliputra, a famed and flourishing city that was home to great kingdoms and scholars. 

Rajendra Dutt Bijalwan (Regional Facilitator, Pallium India) visited Patna from July 16 to July 19 to explore the current status of palliative care in Bihar. He met with state and local authorities as well as palliative care providers at the Mahavir Cancer Sansthan, Patna. This included Palliative Care consultants Dr. Reeta Rani and Dr. Mukul Sharma, the Administrative Director Dr. Biswajit Sanyal, Director Admin, at the Anjaneya Anurag Hospice Patna, Nurse Jhuma Banerjee and in Duncan Hospital, Raxaul Dr. Dr Prabhu L Joseph-Managing Director, Dr Rubel M-Palliative Consultant etc.

On 18 and 19 July Rajendra held an official meeting with State Health Society (NHM Bihar) officials, Dr. AK Shahi, SPO, Dr. NK Sinha, NPPC Nodal officer, Mr. Avinash Pandey, SPM etc.

Mr. Suharsha Bhagat (IAS), the Executive Director of SHS Bihar discussed setting up home care teams in five districts of Bihar in the initial phase, for which a proposal has been submitted. 

Discussions emphasised he need for strong community participation.

Currently palliative care services like OPD, IP day care facilities are available at Mahaveer Cancer Institute, Anjani Anurag Hospice, AIIMS Patna, Tata Hospital Muzaffarpur, Duncan Hospital Raxaul and Madhepura Christian Hospital. Pain management medicines like morphine are also available in these palliative care centres.
