Pallium India’s Regional Facilitator, Rajendra Dutt Bijalwan recently visited the district of Uttarkashi in Uttarakhand to connect with officials in charge of government hospitals and advocate for the inclusion of palliative care services in District Hospitals and CHCs (Community Health Centres). 

Rajendra met with the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and Chief Medical Superintendent (CMS) of the Uttarkashi district. They discussed potential ways in which palliative care services may be implemented in the district per the National Program for Palliative Care (NPPC) guidelines.

On 23rd and 24th April 2024, Rajendra conducted an awareness program for the District Hospital and CHC staff, presenting the need for palliative care services in the area. 41 participants which included doctors, nurses and paramedical staff from District Hospital Uttarkashi, CHC Barkot and CHC Naugaon, attended the session.

A meeting was also held with the team of CHC Purola where there are currently two doctors in the CHC who have been trained in palliative care already. The Medical Officer in charge of CHC Purola issued an order on 25th April 2024 to start palliative care Outpatient and In-patient units at the Community Health Centre. This program has been commenced and work is underway to improve access in Purola.
