Dr Piyush Gupta, organizing secretary, invites you to the 18th International Conference of Indian Association of Palliative Care at Lucknow – the historic City of Nawabs having rich cultural heritage. To be held from February 11th to 13th, 2011 (Friday – Sunday) at Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences.

The theme of the conference is “Networking in Palliative Care“, Dr Gupta’s invitation letter says,

Our theme, “Networking in Palliative Care” shall seek an answer to:

When the hardcore criminals sentenced to death, are asked for their last wish; which is always fulfilled and all the civilized nations aim at a painless death even for them, isn’t it unfortunate that in our country; the patients getting death warrants by Cancer; have to suffer for months together in excruciating pain; cursing themselves for none of their sins; praying for an early death?

Should they not be given freedom from acute pain?

Yes! Says WHO by giving them “Oral Morphine”. Then why are they deprived of this at the cost of their sufferings, despite India being one of the largest producer of Opium?

We have to go even beyond Oral Morphine to ensure life and death with dignity.

Networking probably has some of the answers.
