Dr M R Rajagopal, Founder & Chairman

Dr. M.R. Rajagopal is also the director of Trivandrum Institute of Palliative Sciences the flagship of Pallium India. He is one of the founders of Pain and Palliative Care Society in Calicut, which became a WHO demonstration project and grew to the present Institute of Palliative Medicine with a network of over 100 palliative care centers in the state of Kerala, as well as several outside the state. This initiative resulted in palliative care reaching about 40% of the needy in Kerala compared to the national average of less than 1%. He is based at Pallium India headquarters in Trivandrum.

Ms Poonam Bagai, Vice–Chairman

An ex-bureaucrat, Ms Poonam Bagai is a cancer survivor. Her fight with cancer left her with the determination to do something about it and she founded “Cankids…Kidscan”, a very successful Non-Government Organization that provides comprehensive cancer care to children in many parts of India. She is also a joint secretary of the Indian Cancer Society. In 2011, the American Cancer Society chose her to be a “Global Cancer Ambassador”. She is based in New Delhi.

Dr V Jayaprakasan, Chief Executive Officer

Former Professor of Veterinary Sciences at Kerala Agricultural University. Now working as a full time voluntary Program Director at Pallium India and is actively involved in all activities of Pallium India, but is directly in charge of centers in North and North Eastern India.

Mr A Vijayakumaran, Treasurer

He took voluntary retirement while working as a bank manager, so that he could devote himself completely to charitable work. He acts as the treasurer of Pallium India and also as the chief administrator of Trivandrum Institute of Palliative Sciences. Mr Vijayakumaran lives in Trivandrum.

Sri Ashok Chitale

A senior lawyer in the Supreme Court of India, he devotes much of his time to charitable work and is involved with seven different charitable trusts in the country, three of them, dealing with cancer. He volunteered his services free, and represents the Indian Association of Palliative Care in its Public Interest Litigation in the Supreme Court of India.

Dr Mallika Tiruvadanan

An anaesthesiologist and Palliative Care Physician from Chennai, South India. She is the founder and president of Lakshmi Palliative Care Association in Chennai. With other pioneers in the field, she took an active role in working with the Government of Tamil Nadu to improve access to opioids for palliative care in the state.

Dr K S Lal

Founder of Vazhakulam Pain and Palliative Care Society, one of the earliest palliative care initiatives in Kerala, India. An Anesthesiologist by training, he has been a very active trustee of Pallium India from its beginning. At the moment he is on an assignment outside India.

Dr Shalini Vallabhan

Dr Shalini Vallabhan is a the former Strategic Director (Asia) at the American Cancer Society. She has a doctorate in Political Science with an emphasis on Health Care Policy. She is a team leader with extensive experience in Asia-region and U.S. health policy, politics, and program strategy, resource mobilization, project implementation, and consensus building in multicultural and multinational environments.
